Finally, the much talked about Navi Mumbai International Airport gets the green signal from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on 23rd November 2010. Recently (Jan 2011) the Ministry of Defence has also cleared the project.
The Rs. 4,000 crores Airport is being built on PPP (Public Private Partnership) basis with 74% equity with private sector. The airport is set to directly create 25,000 jobs in and around the area.
In an exclusive interview on CNBC-TV18, Ashutosh Limaye, associate director – strategic consulting at Jones Lang LaSalle India says, “Infrastructure projects like airports bring in a lot of employment opportunities. Airports work 24 x 7 and you require people who stay close by for ease of transportation. That creates a lot of residential demand”.
Finally, the much talked about Hyde Park in London, Central Park in New York are some of the fine examples of large recreational parks that standout in history. The Central Park project is an endeavour, not to emulate these historic parks, but to create a public park synthesizing the concepts of these parks, relate the park to present times, in particular the ethos of Navi Mumbai and further reflect into the future.
It spreads over an area of around 200 acres in Kharghar. It is a virtually link between the hills dotting Kharghar & the creek. A natural channel runs from hills to creek with fully grown trees and vegetation at sporadic locations. It accommodates diverse functions of active and passive recreations starting from Jogger’s Tracks, Botanical Gardens, Amphi theatre and Theme Parks to a full fledged Sports Stadium.
After Central Park at Kharghar, another welcome addition to the ever growing list of city level facilities in Navi Mumbai is the 18-hole Golf Course at Kharghar. It is a signature Golf Course of international standards in Sector – 22 of Kharghar, spread over an area of 260 acres and is located just across the Central Park in Kharghar.
The Golf Course will also contain a Club House, 5 Star Hotel and a Golf Academy to train people in Golf. The site for this golf course has an idyllic setting with the Pandav Waterfalls as the backdrop and the overview of Central Park.
The Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) is proposed to be developed as an Expressway link with a six-lane dual carriageway road bridge and rail bridge connecting Sewri on Mumbai side to Nhava on Navi Mumbai side. The MTHL project is proposed to commence from the east side of Sewri Railway Station on the Harbor Line of Central Railway and proceed to Nhava and terminate at the north of Chirle village with an interchange to National Highway 4B on the mainland.
The Navi Mumbai Metro is proposed to consist of 6 corridors covering a distance of 117.3 km. The entire system is planned to be elevated.
Corridor 1 begins at Uran and goes via Ranjanpada and ends at Nerul covering a distance of 28.3 km. Corridor 2 covers a distance of 21 km and starts from Belapur and goes via Kharghar, Taloje, Kalamboli, Khandeshwar and ends at Navi Mumbai International Airport. The 3rd corridor begins at Vashi and goes via Nerul and terminates at Panvel covering a distance of 25 km. The 4th corridor begins at Ranjanpada and goes and finally terminates at Seawoods covering a distance of 14 km. The 5th corridor is planned over a distance of 20 km beginning at Dighe, going via Turbhe and terminating at Belapur. The 6th corridor begins at Vashi and ends at Mahape going via Ghansoli covering a distance of 9 km.
Corridor 2 is to be taken up at first and is planned to be built over 3 phases.
Kharghar is a node of Navi Mumbai lying at foot of the picturesque Kharghar Hills, and located just after CBD Belapur. The Area started developing in 1995 and now it has of number of ready and under-construction projects both in the commercial and residential segments. With so many new projects coming up these days Kharghar too claims to be the third most developed node of Navi Mumbai after Vashi and Nerul.

Ulwe, at present, is the hotbed of new construction and development of Residential housing in Navi Mumbai.
The road, rail and drainage network in Ulwe has already been developed to a great extent and is rapidly growing.
Once developed, Ulwe will be the closest link to Mumbai, via the proposed Nhava-Sewri Trans-harbor link. It is already well connected to Seawoods, Belapur and Panvel by 4-lane roads. The node shall have two suburban railway stations connecting Seawoods to Uran.
Karjat is a preferred spot for weekend holidays, picnics, river rafting, trekking, hiking, and mountain climbing. It is a favored destination during rainy season. Many farm houses and residential colonies are situated here with all civil amenities and a municipal corporation. People from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune have second or weekend homes here and regularly celebrate festivals, new year parties, week-end bash here. It is also popular for pleasure visits during the monsoon season. Distance from Chembur to Karjat is 46 kilometres and from Sion it is 49 kilometres. Karjat has an advanced bio-tech institute which has been developing patented hybrid varieties of rice of international repute, apart from other crops and techniques.
Art Director Nitin Chandrakant Desai’s “ND Studio” is a major stopover attraction for Karjat Tourists these days and top directors Films are shot here. White Feather Films is also setting up a new studio here. Hollywood production companies such as Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney and DreamWorks(with Reliance Big Studio) are setting up mega studios and production facilities here. Academy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire was shot here.

Karjat is also a trekking destination: it offers plenty of trails, ranging from medium to very demanding. The undulating hilly terrain and lofty slopes make it an ideal spot for trekking enthusiasts. The three prominent trekking trail leads to Matheran via Rambagh point, Peth Fort, and Chanderi Fort.
It’s possible to go for white water rafting during the monsoon, on the upper sections of the Ulhas River. Kondana Village, 15 km from Karjat, is the put-in point. The best time go rafting is July to September, and the nerve tingling rafting adventure highly depends on the rainfall.

Panvel is about 300 years old, developed around trade routes (both land and sea), during the Mughal rule and hence after by the Marathas, the British and the Portuguese. Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) was established in the year 1852, which is the oldest municipal council of Maharashtra. Also civilians celebrated Sesquicentennial anniversary (150th anniversary) of Panvel Municipal Council (PMC)in the year 2002. The city prospered and grew due to the influence of large scale trade by land and sea. This was characterised by the large Wadas (Palace-like homes) that came up during the Peshwai and post-Peshwai period. It is also said that old name of this city was Paneli. There were Historic cannons (During the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) situated on Panvel port.
Between Pen and Panvel lies the Karnala fort. At the bottom of the fort there is a bird sanctuary. Karnala is 65 km away from Mumbai, 120 km away from Pune and 13 km away from Panvel. The sanctuary is around 25 m above mean sea level, while the fort itself is 370 m above mean sea level. Maharashtra Government declared this 9 km. region as the bird sanctuary in 1968-69. Rich with natural habitats for various kinds of birds, in the sanctuary one can find around 150 species of birds. One can watch for Red-vented Bulbul, Grey Hornbill, Owl, Paradise Fly Catcher. Panvel is also famous for Watermelon.
Two of the eight Ashtavinayak temples of the God Ganesha are close to Panvel, Ballaleshwar Pali and Varadavinayaka at Mahad, near Khopoli, on the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. It is different from Mahad.

Panvel is surrounded by some major MIDC managed regions e.g. Patalganga, Taloja, Nagothane, Roha, Khopoli. Some of the Indian Industry majors like Larsen & Toubro Limited, Reliance, Hindustan Organics Chemicals Ltd., ONGC, IPCL are based around Panvel providing mass employment. The JNPT port is also located near Panvel. New SEZs declared by Government are coming around Panvel. Inside the city some smaller entities like Dhootpapeshwar Trust can be found.

The city will have three parts viz. Energy City, Information Technology and Telecom City, and Entertainment City. The project is expected to create employment for 7.5 lakh people. The first phase is expected to be complete by 2014 while the entire project will be ready by 2020.

Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Sewri-Nhava Sheva Trans Harbour Link, is a proposed 22 km, freeway grade road bridge connecting the Indian city of Mumbai with Navi Mumbai, its satellite city. When completed, it would be the longest sea bridge in India. The bridge will begin in Sewri, South Mumbai and cross Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island and will terminate at Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva. The road will be linked to the Mumbai Pune Expressway in the east, and to the proposed Western Freeway in the west. The sea link will contain a 6 lane highway, which will be 27 meters in width, in addition to edge strip and crash barrier. The project is estimated to cost 11000 crore (US$1.7 billion) and is officially estimated to be completed in 2019.
A bridge between Mumbai and the mainland was first proposed by Wilbur Smith and Associates, who conducted extensive studies and filed a report to the Ministry of Transport on 19 December 1963. Among other projects, the report proposed the construction of a sea link, known as the Uran Bridge, to connect Mumbai with the mainland.
Adlabs Imagica is an amusement park located near the city of Khopoli on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The park is owned and operated by Adlabs Entertainment Limited (AEL). The Rs 1,650-crore theme park spread over 300 acres opened in April 2013. It offers entertainment, dining, shopping and accommodation.
The park can accommodate as many as 20,000 visitors. The park features 26 attractions and five themed restaurants, including a ride based on the Bollywood film Mr. India, India’s biggest floor-less roller coaster, a 300-room hotel and a water park named Aquamagica.
